Love expects nothing in return.
Do you find that when you're nice to someone, you expect that person to be nice back to you? But Jesus tells us to do good to others "without expecting to get anything back." (Luke 6:35) To love as God loves is to love without any thought of payback or reward. It is to love as Jesus loved us- "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." (John 13:34) Its easy to love "the lovely"- the nice, sweet people. But its much harder to love "the unlovely"- people who are mean and a pain to be around. Only the Holy Spirit at work in your life can help you to love like Jesus.
